Rocket here! Thanks to Poppy (what WOULD I do without her?!?!) I’m staying at the Barclay House Hotel in Looe.
Work has condemned me to a few days in Devon and Cornwall (yup! tough job huh?) I was doing me usual pontification over hotel choice, location, location, shower head power, and frankly, time was running out, Poppy huffed and puffed and came up with this little gem. Staff were really friendly, from the first contact the assistant manager, Julie, who took the booking. Just the kinda welcoming person you look forward to meeting when you get there.
A couple of beers (local Skinners – Proper Job) on the terrace in the blazing setting sun set us up a treat for the evening meal.
It’s always a good sign when your short-list is narrowed down to 3 or 4. In the end I went for the Fowey Mussels in a cream cider sauce. Plump, moist ‘n tasty – just how I like ’em!! I would have preferred crusty white bread for the sauce. My colleague’s Dressed Looe Bay crab starter looked mighty fine too!
On to the mains and again, it wasn’t easy to pick one, but I went for the Lemon Sole, crispy potatoes, brown Shrimps and lemon caper butter (what’s not to like?!?!) beautifully cooked sole just falling off the bone, the nutty butter and shrimp. The bonus? Samphire – not mentioned on the menu but the natural seasoning and crunch it offered to the dish was a delight. It was washed down with a nice Pinot Noir (I’m not a white with fish, as a matter of course, kinda guy) at a very reasonable price.
Breakfast will be consumed after publication of this blog but based on this evening’s offering I have high hopes indeed!!
THANKS ROCKET!!!!!XXOO
